Celery Celebrity is a self blanching type with short stalks. Quick to mature for the earliest outdoor crops, it has consistently high yields of superb quality stalks with a lovely flavour. Has very little stringiness.
The wild celery plant - from which cultivated varieties are selected - is found on boggy riversides and marshy ground, giving a clue to the growing conditions it needs. Soil should be moisture-retentive and never dry out. Celery hearts are particularly tasty and can be eaten raw or braised by simmering.
Celery Celebrity Vegetable Seed Information
Seed Quantity: | Approx 300 seeds per pack. |
Site: | Moisture retentive |
When to Sow: | March - April |
How to Sow: | Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Cover seed with a fine layer of vermiculite or compost. Propagate. Ideal temp. 21°C. Germination takes up to 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed with 30cm spacing. |
Care: | Low temperatures after germination can cause ‘bolting’ (running to seed) later in life; temperatures should not fall below 10°C (50°F) for long than 12 hours until they are established. Delay sowing until suitable temperatures can be maintained. Self-blanching celery can be planted at ground level and will blanch itself by self-shading. |
Harvest: | Harvest when the stalks reach 30cm approx. by lifting the plants with a garden fork. Harvest from the outside of the block and work towards the centre to minimise plant damage. |
