Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons is also sometimes listed as 'Merville de Quatre Saison' as it originates from France. It is an easy to grow heritage variety (1885) that can be harvested nearly all year round.
Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons produces medium/large butterhead type lettuces with deep crimson outer leaves and light green centre leaves.
Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons is slow to bolt and tolerant of high and low temperatures so is a perfect variety to sow from January to April or September to November. Autumn sowings to overwinter will need extra protection during the winter months e.g cloche etc.
A good all round lettuce that brightens up the salad bowl and the veg plot for a long time!
Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons Vegetable Seed Information
Seed Quantity: | Approx 900 seeds per pack. |
Site: | Prefers well drained, moist, rich soil. But grows and looks well in containers. |
When to Sow | Indoors: January to March. Outdoors: March to April or September to November. |
How to Sow: | Sow thinly outside 1cm deep in rows 25cm apart in a well-prepared bed and lightly cover with fine soil & water carefully. Seedlings should germinate in 7-14 days. When large enough to handle thin seedlings to one every 15cm and then again a 2-3 weeks later to one every 30cm. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply. Early sowings will benefit from sowing & potting on inside and transplanting outside later when soil has warmed up (April onwards). Late sowings will need added protection during winter months e.g. cloche etc. |
Care: | In spring/summer keep soil moist especially during dry weather, weed free and protect early/late sowings with a cloche. Best to water in the morning as watering in the evening will increase the risk of disease. |
